Ingham County Court is also known as the 55th District Court. This Court has jurisdiction in the County. Its judicial staff includes two District Judges who are elected for a term of six years. The judges have appointed a full time attorney/magistrate and a part time magistrate to assist in judicial duties. The Administration of the court is divided into four main divisions: Traffic, Civil, Criminal and Probation.
The court staff processes the following: criminal and traffic misdemeanors with a one year or less term of imprisonment (jury or non jury trials); traffic, state and municipal civil infraction cases; felony and misdemeanor arraignments; felony preliminary examinations; Issue arrest and search warrants upon showing of probable cause; Civil jury and non jury trials, when the amount in controversy is $25,000.00 or less, Civil Small Claims, when the amount in controversy is $3,000.00 or less; Weddings.
The Civil Division schedules weddings before the Magistrate or District Judges with a fee of $10.00. Individuals must bring their marriage license and two witnesses to the Court. The Landlord/Tenant division involves summary proceedings to recover land, premises, or a money judgment. The Small Claims division resolves matters involving $3,000.00 or less. The parties may not be represented by attorneys and waive all jury and appeal rights.
